Blog Post No. 1 — Why am I writing?

Welcome to my blog! I am Xavier Nunez-Sundara. I am a son, a brother, and a grandson. I’m also, crucially, a first-year in college.

I say ‘crucially,’ there because being a first-year in college is the driving factor for why I’m starting this blog. Like it or not, I’ve entered into the adult world through the gates of college, and with that comes a great deal of new responsibility as a person. No one’s going to force me to go to class anymore, for instance, or regularly check on the status of my homework or projects. I need to manage my time and my priorities on my own.

One of the many responsibilities I now have in this adult world is to be an effective writer. Now, I love creative writing. In my spare time, I create fictional worlds and write stories that take place in those worlds. However, I must admit, I’m not the best writer (high school English was my weakest subject, but I tried). An example of my issues: My proclivities for byzantine sentence structure, with appositives within appositives, and abstruse language certainly don’t help the matter. The time period I have for this deficiency being slightly excusable is growing ever shorter by the day. In the adult world, the ability to effectively articulate yourself, through your voice and on the page, is essential. So, why not get some practice in?

Another one of the responsibilities I have in this new world is to stay in touch with those I care about. Back in high school, this was easy. You stayed in touch with people by going up to them at lunch, asking them how their day was, and, if you did a sport together, you’d practice together. But this is college. Your high school friends may be going to the same school as you, and they may not. It’s up to me to keep up those connections if I really value them. I hope that this blog will be one way of doing that, by providing my friends a quick access point to see what I’m thinking about at a given moment. Maybe, they’ll even comment on a post or two, and I can talk with them that way.

The last consideration that finally pushed me into making this blog was that, as an adult, I need to be able to put myself out there, not just for employers. I need to put myself out there for everyone. As Ali Abdaal, a productivity YouTuber, highlights multiple times in multiple videos, having a website increases your ‘surface of serendipity.’ That is, having a website increases the chances you have for meeting someone who can contribute, serendipitously, to your success/happiness. I’m not sure about the reader of this blog, but I tend to think those are positive things. So, I’ll be seeking them out, for now.

Conclusion

Recognizing that I am entering a new adult world, I created this website to more effectively hone my skills and fulfill my responsibilities in this new world. Through my blog writing, I hope that I will be able to become a more effective writer, a better friend, and have the chance to meet awesome people.
